Inside Tower Bridge: Glass Walkway Views, Tips & What to Expect

by | May 27, 2025 | Blog, Feature, London | 0 comments

After living in London for 15 years, I finally did it. I went inside Tower Bridge. Not just walked over it (a million times), but actually paid for the full experience: the glass walkway, panoramic views, the original engine rooms — the lot.

If you’re a Londoner who’s never done it or a visitor planning your itinerary, here’s my full review (and a few pro tips) of what to expect. Also my pick of the hotels for Tower Bridge.

How Much Does It Cost to Go Inside Tower Bridge?

Entry costs £12.30 for adults when booked online (or £16 at the door — which is what I paid). You enter through the North Tower on the west side, closest to Tower Hill station and the Tower of London. Alternatively, London Bridge station is a 10-minute walk away.

Getting to the Top: Take the Stairs if You Can

There’s a lift available, but we decided to climb the 206 steps to the top and I recommend it if you’re able. You get views as you go and fun facts along the way (including that Tower Bridge was originally painted a rather unglamorous chocolate brown before getting its patriotic red, white, and blue makeover for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977).

The Glass Walkway: A Love Letter to Adrenaline

At the top, you’re greeted by two glass walkways which are 42 metres above the River Thames. One on each side of the tower. The views are spectacular: you’ll spot the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Shard, and even Oxo Tower on a clear day.

If you’re nervous about heights (like me), you can walk along the solid edge sections, or just do what I did: panic briefly, then lie down in the middle of the glass and get the shot.

💡 Photo Tip: Wait for a quiet moment and use the mirror installed above the walkway for a reflection shot of dreams — think double-decker buses and black cabs beneath your feet.

What to Wear Inside Tower Bridge

  • Flat shoes are ideal (there are a lot of stairs)

  • Skirts and jeans are fine — but maybe skip anything bright white if you plan to lie on the glass!

  • It’s mainly indoors, so don’t stress about the weather.

Don’t Skip the Engine Room

Once you’ve crossed the glass walkways, follow the painted blue line outside to the engine room which is a short walk away. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Tower Bridge’s history, when steam engines powered the lifting mechanism and 80+ people were needed to operate it.

You’ll also meet the quirky Bridge Cats which are a nod to the real-life cats who lived in the engine rooms until the 1980s.

Is the Tower Bridge Experience Worth It?

In a word? Yes.

It’s a fun, fascinating and surprisingly photogenic experience — and something I’d definitely recommend to Londoners and visitors alike. We spent about 90 minutes taking our time, snapping pictures, and soaking up the views.

At the end, there’s a gift shop with fun souvenirs like mugs, tote bags and plush toys. If you follow me on YouTube or Instagram, you’ll know I’m always scouting Instagrammable London spots, and this one is absolutely worth adding to your list.
