Regent’s Park London Guide: Roses, Blossom & Hidden Gardens

by | Jun 18, 2026 | Blog, London, Summer | 0 comments

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…” and few places in London capture the romance of summer quite like Queen Mary’s Gardens in Regent’s Park.

With thousands of colourful roses filling the air with fragrance, peaceful hidden corners, elegant fountains and beautiful walking paths, it is one of the most enchanting places to visit in London.

Regent’s Park is much more than a summer rose garden. This historic Royal Park transforms throughout the year, from clouds of pale pink cherry blossom in spring to golden avenues of autumn trees. Add in a peaceful boating lake, the famous Open Air Theatre, charming cafés and the newly opened Queen Elizabeth II Garden, and you have the perfect London day out.

In this complete Regent’s Park guide, I’ll share the best places to visit, when to go, and my favourite seasonal highlights after years of walking, running and exploring this beautiful corner of London.

Queen Mary’s Gardens: Regent’s Park’s Spectacular Rose Garden

The highlight of any summer visit to Regent’s Park has to be Queen Mary’s Gardens, one of the most romantic and beautiful gardens in London.

Officially opened in 1935, the gardens are famous for holding London’s largest collection of roses, with around 12,000 roses and hundreds of varieties creating a breathtaking display of colour and fragrance.

The very best time to visit is June, when the roses are usually at their peak, although the flowering season is surprisingly long and you can often still spot beautiful blooms later in the summer and even into autumn.

My favourite part of the garden is the circular rose beds, where every shade of pink, red, yellow and white creates a rainbow of colour. The carefully placed benches make it the perfect place to slow down with a book, enjoy a quiet moment or simply sit and appreciate the incredible scent of the flowers.

Look out for the beautiful rose-covered arches, which make some of the prettiest photo spots in Regent’s Park and give the garden a truly magical, secret garden feel.

The Japanese Garden, Golden Jubilee Gates and Hidden Corners

While the roses are the star of the show, take time to explore the quieter corners of Queen Mary’s Gardens.

The Japanese Garden is one of my favourite hidden spots in the entire park. With its gentle waterfalls, streams, willow trees and beautiful planting, it feels like stepping into a peaceful world away from the busy streets of London. I love the way butterflies dance around the wildflowers in summer, creating a scene that feels almost like a fairy tale.

Another beautiful feature is the Golden Jubilee Gates, which were created to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V and provide a grand entrance into the gardens.

Nearby, you’ll also find the striking Triton Fountain and the Jungle Border, where palms, ferns and exotic plants bring a completely different atmosphere to this elegant London garden.

See a Performance at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

One of Regent’s Park’s most unique experiences is spending an evening at the Open Air Theatre.

Set within the gardens and surrounded by trees, this outdoor theatre has a magical atmosphere on a summer evening. I recently watched a performance of Sherlock Holmes here and absolutely loved the experience.

My top tip is to bring an extra layer or a blanket, as even the warmest London day can become surprisingly cool once the sun goes down.

Where to Eat and Drink in Regent’s Park

A day exploring Regent’s Park works up an appetite, and thankfully there are some lovely places to stop for refreshments.

Regent’s Bar & Kitchen is one of my favourite spots in the park, especially on a sunny day. The large outdoor terrace surrounded by planting makes it feel like a garden escape in the middle of London.

On my visit, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast of smoked salmon, cream cheese, poached eggs, capers and dill served in a soft brioche bap, alongside a much-needed coffee.

Later in the day, we returned for a blackcurrant Eton mess and a rich chocolate dessert — the perfect sweet treat after walking around the gardens.

Near the boating lake, the Waterside Café is another charming stop, with outdoor seating and beautiful views over the water.

Boating on the Lake: A Fun Summer Activity

If you are looking for a classic London summer activity, hiring a rowing or paddle boat on Regent’s Park boating lake is a wonderful way to see the park from a different perspective.

We hired a boat for half an hour, and it was such a peaceful experience drifting across the water surrounded by ducks, trees and beautiful views.

It is a lovely activity for families, couples or friends, and definitely adds a little bit of romance and fun to your day in the park.

The Queen Elizabeth II Garden

One of Regent’s Park’s newest attractions is the Queen Elizabeth II Garden, located just off the Broad Walk.

This two-acre garden has been designed as a sustainable space that will continue to mature and develop over the coming years.

With gentle water features, beautiful planting and a quiet atmosphere, it provides another peaceful escape within the park.

The garden also includes an inscription reminding visitors of the importance of balancing action with reflection — a fitting message for such a calming space.

Regent’s Park in Spring: Cherry Blossom and Tulips

Although the roses are a summer highlight, Regent’s Park is beautiful throughout the year.

Spring is one of my favourite times to visit, when the famous cherry blossom trees in Avenue Gardens create a spectacular canopy of pale pink flowers.

Because this is one of London’s most popular blossom locations, I recommend visiting early in the morning if you would like quieter photographs.

You’ll also discover colourful tulips, daffodils and spring flowers throughout the park, creating an incredible display of seasonal colour. Read my full blog here.

Regent’s Park in Autumn and a Walk to Primrose Hill

Autumn brings a completely different kind of beauty to Regent’s Park.

The Broad Walk is particularly famous for its golden trees, which create one of London’s most photogenic autumn scenes.

Even Queen Mary’s Gardens can still surprise visitors with late-season roses, offering a final burst of colour before winter arrives.

From the northern edge of the park, it is easy to continue your walk to the beautiful neighbourhood of Primrose Hill. Wander past the famous pastel-coloured houses and climb to the top of the hill for one of the most iconic panoramic views of the London skyline. Read more about Autumn in London here.

How to Get to Regent’s Park

Regent’s Park is incredibly easy to reach by public transport.

The nearest stations include Regent’s Park Underground Station, Great Portland Street and Baker Street. If arriving via Baker Street, you can enjoy a short walk past the famous Sherlock Holmes statue and Madame Tussauds before entering the park.

Final Thoughts: Is Regent’s Park Worth Visiting?

Whether you visit for the famous roses of Queen Mary’s Gardens, the spring blossom, autumn colours or simply a peaceful afternoon with coffee and a walk, Regent’s Park is one of the most beautiful places in London.

Having lived nearby and spent many years running, walking and exploring these paths, it is a place that has always felt special to me.

From secret gardens and romantic rose arches to boating on the lake and spectacular city views from nearby Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park truly offers something magical in every season.

If you are planning a trip to London, make sure you add this timeless Royal Park to your itinerary.
