Day Trip from London to the Mayfield Secret Lavender Garden

by | Jun 25, 2025 | Blog, London | 0 comments

Mayfield Lavender Farm is one of the UK’s most Instagrammable summer hotspots and this year, there’s something new blooming. I’ve visited the iconic Mayfield Lavender Fam before (click here), but this time I was buzzing (like the bees!) to explore their brand-new Secret Lavender Garden, tucked away in the Surrey Hills. We filmed, we posed, we picnicked—and yes, we got our floral fix in both of their sites in just one day. Here’s everything you need to know before you visit. I was invited on 23 June 2025 so peak lavender time might be a few weeks away 🙂

🌸 A Brand-New Secret Lavender Garden

Located just 15 miles south of central London, this new 12-acre space is the passion project of owner Lorna Maye, who introduced it to us on camera (take a look at my YouTube video above). After more than a decade in the making, the Secret Lavender Garden opened with timed ticket slots, relaxed pathways, and all the dreamy photo ops your content-loving heart could desire.

From the lavender-lined paths to the iconic red phone box and the magical purple keyhole door, this place is straight out of a fairytale.

💜 Lorna explained that they named it the “Secret Garden” because of the hidden winding trails and peaceful pockets throughout. You genuinely feel like you’ve stumbled into your own private wonderland.

📸 What to Wear & Shoot

If you’re planning a trip just for the Instagram content (no judgment here), I’d recommend:

  • Light or white outfits to contrast with the purple

  • Flat shoes—it’s grassy and uneven in places

  • Accessories like hats, baskets or a parasol for fun, floaty vibes

We spent a solid 15 minutes getting the shot with the red phone box and another stretch by the purple keyhole door, which is ideal for wide landscape shots and dreamy close-ups.

Top tip – use the key hole to shoot video through – start wide and move closer!

🪻 Explore the Themed Fields

Each section of the Secret Garden has a name and a vibe:

  • Provence Field – Classic lavender aesthetic with tall purple blooms and incredible scent. Bees everywhere (but in a lovely, relaxed way).

  • Tuscany Field – Lightly planted with space to stroll between rows, it reminded my friend of her time in Italy.

  • Room With a View – A little hut overlooking a field, perfect for a sit-down moment or a thoughtful Instagram caption.

  • Bird Sanctuary & Orchard – A calm, tree-lined area with fruit trees and shade. Ideal for picnics and a peaceful moment.

🧺 Picnics, Tea, and Moo-i-Five

My friend Fatinah is a foodie, so we came prepared!

Our picnic included pesto chicken sandwiches, mozzarella salad, and a mini cheeseboard. She brought a lovely bottle of non-alcoholic rose wine from Tesco!

The cutest picnic spot!

But you can also order a picnic when you book your ticket, or grab food and drinks from the Café (which serves lavender Earl Grey tea in the prettiest floral tea pot and cups).

Oh, and meet Jane Bond from Moo-i-Five, the life-sized lavender-loving cow statue—perfect for the kids and just fun to spot!

🌞 The Original Mayfield Lavender Farm

After our time in the Secret Garden, we drove 10 minutes to the original Mayfield Lavender Farm in Banstead, which is much larger and more established. Here you’ll find:

  • A second red phone box and iconic lavender heart

  • Bigger fields perfect for wide shots and family outings

  • A cute gift shop and café with branded lavender goodies

  • Occasional themed evenings like Prosecco & Paella nights (yes please!)

  • There’s also a little locomotive called Looby Loo to take a little tour around the grounds

You don’t need to pre-book parking here, but it’s advised on busy weekends. It’s super relaxed—think field-side parking and portaloo charm—and the purple takeaway cups from the café were a big hit with us. There’s also no picnics at this location

🎬 Final Thoughts

If you want a content-packed day out with calm countryside vibes, Mayfield Lavender delivers—especially with the new Secret Garden. We filmed, frolicked, drank lavender tea, and even snuck in an outfit change. Was it intense? Maybe. Was it worth it? 100%.

Top tips:

  • Pre-book your time slot for the Secret Garden

  • Visit early or late in the day for the best light (and fewer people)

  • Bring sun cream, flat shoes, and lots of water

  • Don’t forget a big hat for both fashion and function!

Thanks for joining us on this lilac-scented journey—do like and subscribe on YouTube if you haven’t already, and I’ll see you soon for more flowers, food, and fabulousness.
